Dallas homes are more vulnerable to termite infestation than most of the other cities in the United States. This has a lot to do with our weather. Termites thrive in our warm, humid sub-tropical climate. The average colony for the typical termite consists of about 60,000 termites. This size of a colony can devour a 2×4 in just a few months. However, Dallas is one of the major sites for the Formosan termites which are commonly referred to as the super termites because they are very aggressive and have much larger colonies. In fact an average colony includes termite population in the hundreds of thousands.
These termites originated in China and made their way to the United States on military cargo ships returning from World War II. They can eat through wood much faster than any other type of termite and a single queen termite lives about 20 years and lays an average of 2,000 eggs per day. These termites cause serious damage to homes and if they are not properly removed will cost you a lot of money.
